Red deer stag calling in an autumn larch forest in the morning mist

Red Deer Rut: From Taiga to Baikal

An autumn wildlife journey through Buryatia and Olkhon Island

About

BBT built this autumn journey around the red deer rut in Buryatia’s taiga. Reserve specialists choose a listening site using current animal activity, while a sheltered forest base makes an evening outdoors comfortable without intruding on the setting. From this close encounter with the seasonal rhythms of the forest, a dedicated Mi-8 flight opens the wider landscapes of Lake Baikal. Four nights on Olkhon bring a slower pace, with local encounters, fishing, stargazing and Siberian banya. The route is designed around one natural event, rather than a collection of attractions.

Itinerary

  1. Day 01: A Welcome to Buryatia

Arrival sets a considerate pace: a local cultural welcome, then time to recover before the expedition begins.

    Experience
An actor portraying a Buryat elder presents khadak scarves as a gesture of respect; local tea, berry drinks and Buryat snacks.
    Arrangements
Private airport transfer to Cosmos Selection Ulan-Ude; restaurant dinner. A three-hour city tour is available by choice.
  2. Day 02: When the Stags Call

The central reason for the journey unfolds at dusk: listening for the deep calls of red deer in the autumn taiga.

    Experience
Ivolginsky Datsan and a Buryat lunch precede a specialist-led wildlife session at a listening site chosen from current deer activity.
    Arrangements
Dedicated Toyota Land Cruiser 200 vehicles; deer-call tubes and binoculars or monoculars; a sheltered forest base with hot drinks, comfortable seating, blankets and food cooked over the fire.
  3. Day 03: Across Baikal to Olkhon

The journey opens out from the forest to the lake: a helicopter crossing leads into Olkhon’s landscapes and living Buryat traditions.

    Experience
Dedicated Mi-8 flight with a planned stop at Peschanaya Bay where conditions allow; Cape Burkhan and Shaman Rock with a local Buryat shaman explaining the site and a brief respectful rite.
    Arrangements
Toyota Land Cruiser 200 transfers on the island; an evening meal of home-style Buryat dishes accompanied by morin khuur music and throat singing. Stone labyrinth stop if time permits.
  4. Day 04: Fishing and the Autumn Sky

An unhurried island day shifts attention to the water in the afternoon and the stars after dark.

    Experience
Fishing with a local guide on the Maloye More Strait; an astronomer-led telescope session in the evening.
    Arrangements
Guided motorboats, tackle, hot drinks and snacks; dinner arranged for the group. Free morning by the lakeshore; fishing participation is optional.
  5. Day 05: Northern Olkhon, Another Perspective

A day among the island’s northern cliffs brings a second perspective on the rut and a private meal above Baikal.

    Experience
Cape Khoboy, Fang Rock and Dashi Namdakov’s Keeper of Baikal; a second deer-listening session if local specialists confirm a suitable, permitted site.
    Arrangements
Speedboat journey along the western coast, reserved Toyota Land Cruiser 200 vehicles on land, return by boat; private field lunch at an elevated viewpoint and dinner after the return.
  6. Day 06: Siberian Banya by the Lake

Time slows further for a bathing tradition shaped around each guest rather than a fixed programme of procedures.

    Experience
Siberian steaming with professional bath masters, hot tubs beside Baikal and herbal tea between sessions.
    Arrangements
A free morning on Olkhon; intensity of steaming and lake swimming are by choice. The day also provides a reserve window for postponed island activities.
  7. Day 07: Tazherany and the Return to Irkutsk

A final day in Baikal’s rocky landscapes gives way to Irkutsk’s merchant history and Siberian cuisine.

    Experience
Valley of Stone Spirits and rock viewpoints in Tazherany, followed by a welcome from an actor portraying merchant Nikolay Kurbatov at the historic hotel complex.
    Arrangements
Speedboats to the mainland, Toyota Land Cruiser 200 vehicles to Irkutsk; private outdoor lunch and a final Siberian dinner without a staged folklore show.
  8. Day 08: Departure

After breakfast at RODINA Grand Hotel & SPA Irkutsk, guests take a private transfer to the airport, timed to their flight.
