Milky Way above Lake Baikal, with travellers and a telescope on the shore

Baikal: From Night Sky to Deep Water

A summer journey joining astronomical observation with the lake’s deepest waters

About

BBT shaped this summer journey around two ways of understanding Baikal’s scale: the night sky above the lake and the deepest waters beneath it. An astronomer-led programme introduces the sky, while a private yacht flotilla carries guests toward Baikal’s maximum depth of 1,642 metres and the cliffs of northern Olkhon. Russian and Buryat cultural encounters, private shore lunches and four island nights give the expedition a measured rhythm beyond its headline experiences.

Itinerary

  1. Day 01: Irkutsk’s Merchant History

The journey begins where Siberian commerce and cultural exchange shaped the city.

    Experience
A historical welcome at RODINA in the former Kurbatov–Rusanov bathhouse; Siberian snacks and a merchant-era introduction.
    Arrangements
Private transfer, time to rest and optional three-hour Irkutsk tour.
  2. Day 02: Russian Siberia and the Night Sky

The Angara’s historical landscape leads toward the journey’s first great scale: the sky above Baikal.

    Experience
Taltsy ethnographic museum with historical interpretation; Baikal Museum and Listvyanka; evening astronomy programme at the Baikal Astrophysical Observatory or an agreed alternative.
    Arrangements
Lunch of traditional Russian cuisine with samovar tea; astronomer and observing equipment, subject to sky conditions.
  3. Day 03: Across Baikal to Olkhon

Private motor yachts turn the crossing itself into an encounter with the lake’s western bays.

    Experience
Private fast-yacht flotilla to Peschanaya Bay; coastal walk toward Sinichka Bay and lunch at Baikalskie Dyuny; onward crossing to Olkhon.
    Arrangements
Island arrival and evening Buryat dinner; hotel on the Maloye More shore.
  4. Day 04: Above Baikal’s Deepest Point

A planned stop over 1,642 metres of water is the journey’s central counterpart to the previous astronomical experience.

    Experience
Private yacht flotilla toward the maximum-depth coordinates; captain-led stop on open water and named visit certificate; northern Olkhon, Cape Khoboy and Keeper of Baikal sculpture.
    Arrangements
Land Cruiser 200 vehicles from the Uzury area; private lunch with elevated lake views; boat return to Khuzhir.
  5. Day 05: Time for the Maloye More

An island reserve day combines a flexible water outing with an evening of local music.

    Experience
Fishing on the Maloye More with local guides and provided tackle; small morin khuur and throat-singing concert at Tataysky Cape.
    Arrangements
Free morning if Day 04 proceeds; fishing and concert rescheduled if the major yacht expedition moves to this day.
  6. Day 06: Shaman Rock and Shoreline Banya

A day of cultural perspective and rest follows the principal open-water expedition.

    Experience
Cape Burkhan, Shaman Rock and a local Buryat shaman’s explanation; Siberian banya with masters and hot tubs.
    Arrangements
Lunch overlooking the cape; optional lake swimming. If astronomy moves to Olkhon, a suitable island evening is used.
  7. Day 07: Ogoy and Tazherany

A final passage links the Buddhist stupa on Ogoy with Tazherany’s rocky shoreline.

    Experience
Speedboat to Ogoy Island’s Enlightenment Stupa; Tazherany and Valley of Stone Spirits; private outdoor lunch.
    Arrangements
Land Cruiser 200 transfer to Irkutsk and a Siberian dinner at Partizan in a historic wooden mansion.
  8. Day 08: Departure

The journey ends with a private airport transfer coordinated around guests’ flights.

    Experience
Breakfast and transfer to Irkutsk Airport.
