Kuril Islands: Life of the Ocean
A sea expedition from Kamchatka through the volcanic archipelago to Sakhalin
About
BBT created this voyage to follow the marine life of the Kuril chain from island to island, rather than treat the ocean as a passage between volcanic landmarks. Eight nights in one expedition-ship cabin connect Steller sea lion haul-outs, sea otters, seabird colonies and the feeding grounds where whales and orcas may appear. Small-boat observations and island landings give way to crater bays, volcanic lakes, warm springs and basalt cliffs, with naturalists explaining how the geography of the archipelago shapes the lives of its animals.
